What Makes a Good Domain

A domain is more than an address. It becomes a brand, appears on invoices and is read out over the phone. These six criteria prevent the most common bad purchases:

Short and noticeable

Two to three syllables are often enough. If you have to spell the domain, you lose customers.

Just write

No hyphens, no numbers, no umlauts. “ae” instead of “ä” is clearer on the phone.

Brand instead of keyword

"webdesign-linz-2026" works interchangeably. A proper name remains in the mind and is more valuable in the long term.

Appropriate ending

.at for Austria, .com for international, .de for DACH, .eu for Europe – the ending sends a signal.

Do not violate trademark rights

Do a trademark search before registering.A cheap domain can be expensive if third-party rights are affected.

Not to be confused

No domain that sounds like a competitor or can be confused with a well-known brand.

Which domain extension suits you?

.at Austria

Local basis of trust and clear assignment. Not a ranking factor, but a strong signal for Austrian customers.

.com International

The most famous ending. Useful if you sell beyond Austria or are building a brand.

.de Germany & DACH

If your main market is Germany, it often only makes sense for Austrian companies as an additional domain.

.eu European Union

For cross-border projects and European organizations.

.org Organizations

For clubs, NGOs and non-profit projects - not for commercial main pages.

.net Technology & Networks

Historical for network services. Less obvious for local businesses than .at or .com.

Important: The ending alone does not bring rankings. Content, technical cleanliness, local signals and real backlinks decide.

What the domain check does not check

The check queries the official registry data. It tells you whether a domain is registered - not whether it is suitable for you. These points are left out:

  • • Trademark and name rights: A free domain can still violate a trademark. Do your research beforehand.
  • • SEO history: Spam, bad backlinks or a manual penalty from the past are not detected.
  • • Prices and registrar: The check does not show registration or renewal prices; these depend on the provider.
  • • Hosting, SSL and Email: The domain is just the address. Hosting, mailboxes and website backups are added separately.
  • • Legal questions: Imprint, GDPR and contract drafting are not part of the check.

From domain to finished website

1. Register

We check the final availability, register the domain and create the administration.

2. Set up technology

DNS, hosting and SSL certificate are set up cleanly – including redirects.

3. Set up email

Mailboxes, SMTP/IMAP, SPF/DKIM/DMARC and spam filters so that mail delivery works.

4. Build website

Design, content, SEO basics, tracking and backups – all from a single source.

Questions about the domain check

How do you check if a domain is free?

About RDAP, the official interface of the domain registries: If a domain is registered, the registry answers – if it is free, no answer comes.

How much does a .at domain cost?

A .at domain typically costs €10-20 per year plus a one-time registration fee. We take care of registration and administration for you – just ask by phone or email.

My desired domain is occupied – what now?

Our suggestions (e.g. get, online or -hq variants and other endings such as .at instead of .com) are often even stronger. Or we ask the owner whether the domain is available for purchase.

Can I get a domain and website from a single source?

Yes, that's exactly what we're here for: register a domain, set up hosting, build a website from €990, set up email - all at Websters in Upper Austria.

Is a .at domain better for Google?

The ending is not a direct ranking factor. A .at domain can appear more trustworthy for Austrian customers and improve the click rate. Content, technical quality, local signals and backlinks remain crucial.

Can a used domain have SEO problems?

Yes. A domain may have been used for spam, bad backlinks, or legally problematic content in the past. Before making a purchase, we check the history, backlinks and indexing - the mere availability check is not enough.

How much does hosting and email cost?

This depends on the number of pages, traffic, storage and the number of mailboxes. We quote a fixed price for the agreed scope and no hidden flat rates. Small projects start cheaper than large infrastructures.

How long does the registration take?

Many endings are registered after a few minutes. For .at and some country endings the registry may take a little longer. We will confirm your status as soon as registration is complete.

Can I move my existing domain?

Yes. We collect the auth code, plan DNS and email migration and avoid outages. It is important not to make the change at the same time as a website change.

Can I check multiple domains at the same time?

Yes, free of charge and without registration. You can check your desired domains one after the other - even a whole list of names for a new project. It makes sense to check all candidates first and then register them so that you can compare the spellings. You only pay for the actual registration, the check itself remains free.
